The PhD Award of the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF) has been presented to Dr. Maja Reimann from the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center, at the annual congress of the German Society for Infectious Diseases in Leipzig on 15 June 2023.

Dr. Reimann studied epidemiology at the University of Bremen and completed her master's thesis at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology in Bremen. For this she already worked on clinical data of tuberculosis patients of the former Medical Clinic in Borstel.

Dr. Reimann's doctoral thesis at the University of Lübeck deals with the development of a prediction model for the termination of therapy for tuberculosis, a disease that must be treated with antibiotics for several months in order to achieve a cure. However, it was previously unclear exactly how long the therapy must last for each affected patient, so that only general recommendations could be made.

In her PhD thesis, Dr. Reimann calculated a model based on data from different patient cohorts at the DZIF and using machine-learning algorithms from more than 45,000 molecules of peripheral blood from tuberculosis patients. This model allows individual predictions to be made about the necessary duration of tuberculosis therapy based on the expression of only 22 gene copies. This is a milestone for tuberculosis diagnostics- and therapy.

Previously in 2022, the young epidemiologist has been honored with the Research Award of the German Society of Pneumology for her achievements.
