We are the lung research center of the Leibniz Association. Our main focus: Common diseases such as asthma, allergies and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as infection-related inflammation of the lungs, in particular tuberculosis (TB).
The program area is dedicated to research into asthma, COPD and allergies, as these are among the most common chronic diseases and therefore cause an enormous burden for both patients and healthcare systems.
The Infections program area is dedicated to researching and combating bacterial infectious diseases of the lung with a focus on tuberculosis. The aim is to improve the control and treatment of this disease.
Congratulations! Prof. Christoph Lange awarded the 2025 Oskar Medical Prize
Prof. Christoph Lange, Medical Director of the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center, has been awarded the 2025 Oskar Medical Prize by the Oskar-Helene-Heim Foundation. The prize, worth €50,000, is one of the most highly endowed medical prizes in Germany.

Renewed certification for berufundfamilie audit
The FZB has received confirmation of its “audit berufundfamilie” certification from the board of trustees of berufundfamilie Service GmbH. This is the third time that the FZB has been awarded the certificate with distinction in special recognition of its long-standing, sustainable family- and life-phase-conscious personnel policy. The certificate is regarded as a seal of quality for a strategically designed work-life balance policy.

Asthma Research: Borstel study selected as “Editors Pick” by Allergy
A study by the Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center (FZB) on the role of interleukin (IL 6) in severe asthma exacerbations following viral infections has been selected as recommended reading by the editors of the journal Allergy.
