Our main focus: Common diseases such as asthma, allergies and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as infection-related inflammation of the lungs, in particular tuberculosis (TB).

The Research Center Borstel, Leibniz Lung Center was represented at the 17th Congress for Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine (KIT) 2026 in Cologne with several scientific contributions on tuberculosis. A particular highlight was the presentation award granted to PD Dr. Thomas Theo Brehm from the Clinical Infectious Diseases Research Group, who received the congress's First Presentation Award.

Two female scientists from the Borstel Research Center, Leibniz Lung Center (FZB) have been honoured at this year’s Congress of the European Society of Mycobacteriology (ESM) in Verona: Dr ir. Margo Diricks received the 2026 Gertrud Meissner Prize, whilst Dr Viola Dreyer was awarded a poster prize.
