Silke Meiners was trained as a biochemist and molecular biologist at the universities of Bonn (Germany), Norwich (GB), and Berlin, where she obtained her PhD degree. In her postdoc training she started to explore the main protein degradation machinery of the cell – the proteasome – as a therapeutic target in cardiovascular diseases at the Charité in Berlin. In 2010, Silke Meiners joined the Comprehensive Pneumology Center at the Helmholtz Center Munich (Germany) as an independent research group leader. She there began to investigate regulation of proteostasis and proteasome function in lung diseases to develop novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of chronic lung diseases. Since September 2021, Silke Meiners is heading a research group dedicated to immunoproteasome research at the Research Center Borstel. She was appointed a full professorship at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel.
